The news this month is dominated by previews for the International Broadcasting
Convention 2001, 14 - 18 September, RAI Amsterdam - some of which is embargoed
until the exhibition opens. The next issue of SYPHAnews will contain a
full roundup, but until then, here are some highlights:
- Matrox Video Products Group (stand 7.121) and Leitch (stand 8.331)
will both show the Leitch VR445 broadcast video server, which incorporates
the latest Matrox DigiServer DTV dual-channel multi-standard audio/video
codec card.
- Eagle Research (stand 7.711) will introduce the EditPro/M portable
nonlinear editing system.
- Dayang (stand 7.610) will show the new X-Edit nonlinear editor and
the DayangNet A/V Network system with MPEG4 offline editing.
- 5D (stand 7.611) will show upgrades to its Masher offline rendering
system which opens the Quantel Henry, HAL and EditBox solutions to plug-in
effects and 3D, including 5D Monsters and other 3rd party tools such
as Maya.
- FAST Multimedia (stand 2.231) will extend its FASTstudio-based product
line and its colour range with blue, offering native editing in all
formats.
- Panasonic Broadcast Europe (stand 10.331) will show the AJ-HDR150
server and the AJ-DE97 DVCPRO 50 version of QuickCutter.
- Quantel (stand 7.221) will launch iQ for the post industry with new
effects and more application and plug-in partners, and Clipbox Studio
for broadcasters. Also featured will be Editbox and the Editbox Choice
built-to-order option.
- Incite Multimedia (stand 7.518) will demonstrate the Incite Editor
integrated with the Matrox MAX card and real time VIA support, and the
Incite Audio Plus using the Merging Technologies Mykerinos PCI card.
- Discreet (stand 7.421) will announce edit 6.5, and the fact that version
5.0 of both its smoke and fire editing and finishing tools are shipping
worldwide.
- Accom (stand 8.159) will feature the WSD/HD digital disk recorder,
the Windows Media and WSD/HD turnkey solution supporting universal Windows
Media Encoding of standard and high definition video formats, AFFINITY
with new Dimension 8.2 software, and AFFINITY/san.
- Editware (stand 7.201) will showcase the Fastrack VS hybrid editing
system designed for use with video servers such as the Grass Valley
Group Profile, the Sony MAV-555, and the Accom Abekas 6000.
- Optibase (stand 2.249) will launch the MPEG MovieMaker 200S PCI encoding
board and the 2nd generation D1 version of the OBAS VideoPump HD-SDI
I/O and SDI I/O boards.
- Fast Forward Video (stand 7.800) will demonstrate its Omega Deck line
of digital video recorders and its new OEM board level version of the
Recon ultra compact DVR.
* Digital Voodoo's D1 Desktop 64AV is Certified for Apple's Final Cut
Pro 2
Digital Voodoo has announced that its D1 Desktop 64 AV has been certified
for Apple's Final Cut Pro 2, and that it is compatible with the newer
G4s announced at MacWorld 2001 and the new dual head nVidia graphics card.
The D1 Desktop 64AV is an uncompressed 10-bit SMPTE 259M SDI standard
definition QuickTime video card with audio features for Apple Macintosh
G3 and G4 series workstations. The retail price for the D1 Desktop 64AV

* Accom Adds Audio and Video Interpolator Options to WSD/HD
Accom showcased the WSD/HD (Work Station Disk/High Definition) recorder
at Siggraph 2001 with new digital audio and video interpolator options.
The digital audio option provides eight tracks of AES/EBU audio for standard
digital audio editing as well as multitrack surround sound production.
The video interpolator option allows for smooth playback in speeds slower
than normal play for field-interlaced standard definition or high definition
material. It processes the video so that it prevents the material from
hopping up and down, and image quality is also improved in slow motion

* StageTools Announces MovingPicture Plug-in for FASTstudio
StageTools has added support for the FAST Multimedia FASTstudio to its
MovingPicture pan and zoom application. MovingPicture takes scanned images
up to 4,000 pixels and allows for perfectly repeatable pans and zooms
directly from a Windows or MacOS platform or as a plug-in to third party
editors. MovingPicture is priced at US$199. See http://www.stagetools.com.
* Videomedia Announces V-LAN Deal for Adobe Premiere Users
Videomedia has announced that until 1 October 2001, anyone purchasing
a V-LAN Express module from Videomedia will receive a free V-LAN/Adobe
plug-in, making a saving of US$250. The plug-in adds frame-accurate device
control to an Adobe Premiere editing system. See http://www.videomedia.com.
* LaCie Breaks the Hard Disk Throughput Barrier with 35MB/s FireWire
Desktop Hard Drives
LaCie has announced that its high-speed external FireWire hard drives
will have a new FireWire controller that provides double the data throughput
performance of previous FireWire drives. Available in 20GB, 40GB, 60GB
and 75GB capacities, the 7200rpm drives stream data to the computer at
a sustained transfer rate of 35MB/s and provide burst performance up to
50MB/s. This makes it suitable for large-volume video and graphic files
or capturing video from DV camcorders. The cost is US$229 for 20GB to

* First Avid World and Pro Tools Conference Announced
Mindshare Ventures and Future Media Concepts, with cooperation from Avid
Technology and Digidesign, announced the first Avid World and Pro Tools
Conference to be held October 7-10 2001, at the New Yorker Hotel, NYC,
US. The event will include a two day exhibition, educational classes,
and keynote speeches. The seminars and sessions will cover editing and
designing tips and techniques for users of Media Composer, Symphony, Avid|DS,
Xpress DV, Unity and AvidProNet Review and Approval. There will be separate

* Quantel Calls for Artist of the Year Entries
Quantel has sent out a call for entries for its Artist of the Year Award
which is run in conjunction with the Promax and BDA associations. There
will be a series of regional competitions over the coming months and the
overall winner will be announced at the BDA and Promax annual convention
in January 2002. To qualify, any work submitted must have been at least
partially undertaken on a Quantel system. To register for an entry pack

The news this month is dominated by previews for the International Broadcasting

Engineering Society Convention, 21 - 24 September, New York - much of
which is embargoed until the respective exhibitions open. The next issue

product announcements, but until then, here are a few highlights:
- Sonifex (IBC, stand 9.136) will feature the Courier digital portable
recorder with a new USB interface.
- Mackie (AES, stand 1110) will display the new MDR24/96 24-track hard
disk recorder.
- AMS Neve (AES, stand 134) will demonstrate the AudioFile SC editor,
with DSP plug-ins and compatibility with Digidesign Pro Tools, and the
Logic 3SC offering editing and mixing.
- Digigram (AES, stand 1444) in conjunction with Audio Precision (AES
2001 stand 400) will unveil a Digigram version of the Audio Precision
Application Note for PC Audio Device Performance Tests.
- Synchro Arts (AES, Digidesign stand 1018) will show the VocALign suite
of automatic audio alignment and editing software, VocALign PRO including
TimeMod mono and stereo time compression/expansion function, the TITAN
solution for soundtrack conforming, and the range of ToolBelt audio
utilities.
* Mackie Ships the MDR24/96 24-Track Hard Disk Recorder
Mackie Designs has started shipping the new MDR24/96 24-track hard disk
recorder. It is fully compatible with the Mackie HDR24/96, and includes
an internal 20GB Ultra-DMA hard disk and a built-in drive bay for Mackie
Media M-90 recording drives and Mackie Media Project backup drives. It
ships with 3x 24-bit, 48kHz analogue I/O cards as standard, sync and clock
capabilities including MIDI MMC and MTC, SMPTE, video blackburst and word
clock, and a 100BaseT Ethernet port. The U.S. street price for the MDR24/96

* Zoom Releases the MRS1044 Multitrack Workstation with FX
Zoom has released the new MRS1044 10-track digital project studio. It
includes a built-in 15GB hard drive, and a mixer section with two-band
EQ and a fader for each channel, and velocity-sensitive rhythm trigger
pads. It features 44.1kHz sampling, 10 virtual tracks per track, six simultaneous
digital effects, built-in drum sounds with a dedicated stereo drum track,
bass sounds with a dedicated bass track. The list price for the MRS1044

* Tascam Launches CD-R/CD-RW Writer to Partner its 788 Digital Portastudio
Tascam has launched a dedicated CD-RW recorder to partner its 788 digital
Portastudio. The CDR788 plugs into the high-speed SCSI port on the 788
and provides CD-mastering and file-backup facilities, and writes to both
CD-R and CD-RW. The record speeds are 12x for CD-R and 10x for CD-RW,
and replay speed is 24x, giving an average sustained data-transfer rate
of 2.8MB/s. The retail price for the CDR788 is GB£299 including VAT. See

* Fairlight Announces New Appointments
Fairlight ESP has named John Lancken as Chief Operating Officer and Karl
Seglins as Vice President of Marketing. Lancken will be based at Fairlight
headquarters in Sydney, Australia, and assumes complete responsibility
for the development and execution of worldwide strategy, product development,
marketing and operations. Having previously served as Senior Vice President
of Worldwide Sales, CEO of Fairlight U.S.A. and Director of Sales and
Marketing, he is a 10-year veteran of Fairlight ESP. Effective immediately,
Seglins assumes complete responsibility for the development and implementation
of the company's marketing communications programmes, and will report
directly to Lancken. Seglins is a five-year veteran of Fairlight ESP having
served as Marketing Services Manager.
* Mackie Assumes Distribution of Soundscape Products
Mackie Designs has announced that it plans to assume all distribution
activities for products developed by Sydec under the Soundscape brand
name. Sydec was acquired by Mackie earlier this year, and this move ends
the distribution agreement between Mackie and Soundscape Digital Technologies,
the company that has been marketing and distributing Sydec products under
the Soundscape brand name since 1993. Under this new arrangement, Mackie
will assume responsibility for the distribution and marketing of Sydec-developed
