The 4K workflow - DVS leads the way with CLIPSTER 4K (5/10/2005)

The German high-end solution provider DVS announces CLIPSTER 4K, a system which allows post houses to conform and finish a full feature film in the highest quality.

DVS, a company with a history of "industry firsts", presents its conforming, editing and finishing system CLIPSTER with a 4K capable configuration at IBC. The high-end version of CLIPSTER processes uncompressed formats up to 4K in real time.

The uncompressed 4K format puts extreme demands on system hard- and software. A single 4K frame (typically 4096 ´ 3112 pixels in RGB 4:4:4) requires almost 50 MB of storage space and a real-time 4K video stream needs a sustained bandwidth of 1.2 GB/sec. 4K offers stunning picture quality and almost achieves the native resolution of film.

Top post houses worldwide are increasingly demanding solutions for their 4K digital intermediate (DI) work. CLIPSTER in 4K configuration is the one stop-solution designed to meet this challenge. The system captures data via dual-link HSDL or data transfer. It is able to conform and finish projects using the native 4K resolution. CLIPSTER 4K plays out the finished job as an uncompressed 4K master in real time over dual-link DVI or analog RGB. The potent software enables the 4K master to be color graded with both primary and secondary color correction. To assist the colorist in achieving the right film look DVS has incorporated color grading, zoom & pan and cropping into the CLIPSTER color correction panel.

CLIPSTER boasts a host of features, too, for SD, HD and 2K film finishing work. It records and plays out true uncompressed data (RGB 4:4:4) in any resolution, bit depth, color space or file type; all in real time without conversions. The editor works with multiple resolutions in real time and freely mixes clips of various resolutions including 4K RGB 12 bit on a single timeline.

With the release of software version 2.0, CLIPSTER's visual effects functionality has grown significantly, too. CLIPSTER performs multi-resolution, primary color correction, pan-and-scan, cropping and transitions in real time. Secondary color correction, rotation and flip/flop complete the comprehensive film finishing tool-set. The new OpenFX plug-in interface gives access to a huge assortment of additional 3rd party effects. To get the right film look during grading, CLIPSTER employs a real-time 3D look-up-table and supports color management tools from Kodak, ARRI and Rising Sun Research.

With its highly intuitive software combined with powerful video processing and ultra-fast disk arrays, CLIPSTER 4K is set to break new ground in the industry.
