DVS and ARRI provide innovative solution for digital dailies workflow (10/4/2006)

DVS Digital Video Systems GmbH and Arnold Richter Cine Technik GmbH & Co. Betriebs KG (ARRI) have established an innovative workflow centered around data for postproduction in film and commercials.

The companies¹ partnership will enhance the efficiency in creating and editing digital dailies. The combined solution will make its debut at NAB 2006.

DVS from Hanover and Arri based in Munich have worked together since early 2006, aiming at establishing an innovative workflow for digital dailies. The products CLIPSTER® , DVS-SAN, ARRISCAN and ARRI CMS complement each other and thereby set new standards. The partnership will change the video based daily workflow to a future-oriented digital and transparent workflow - starting with creating the dailies and leading to the final digital intermediate.

Traditionally, a producer or director will watch the day¹s shot on an HD or SD tape that has been sampled by a telecine. This material will go into offline editing. The final, digital master emerges from the selected takes after a film scanner has digitized those in high resolution. So far, this process requires both a telecine and a film scanner, but then, the systems¹ color metrics and geometry are not consistent. The color correction in video will never be identical to the high-resolution scan, therefore, the director will view a different image in the DI suite.

DVS and ARRI offer a more intelligent solution: the ARRISCAN takes over the central role of digitizing the film and thereby replaces the telecine process. Subsequently, DVS products deal with the material in high resolution. The scanned data is stored on a DVS-SAN which allows parallel editing processes. The DI workstation CLIPSTER® thereupon creates high-definition SD and HD dailies required for offline editing.

Ideally, the user handles color consistent images of high-resolution scans and digital dailies: editing, color correction and visual effects in the same color space and geometry. An especially user-friendly environment is given when all metadata accompany the (post)production from start to end and are provided for the dailies. This can result in using high-quality dailies directly for TV productions, all of which is provided by the new workflow.
