Grass Valley Unveils Flexible, Integrated K2- and EDIUS- based Shared Production Environment (11/5/2006)

Integrated, Award-Winning Nonlinear Editor and Powerful Storage System Eliminate Time-Consuming Transcoding Processes

Thomson (Euronext Paris: 18453; NYSE: TMS) announced integration between its Grass Valley(tm) K2 Media Server and Client storage system and the EDIUS(tm) nonlinear craft editor. With its unique ability to eliminate transcoding processes as well as its support of seamless media and file compatibility, the integrated, shared-editing solution brings new levels of price performance and workflow efficiencies to news, sports and post production environments.

Unlike other solutions which require time-consuming transcoding every step of the way between browse, editing, and playout applications in the production process, the Grass Valley solution enables users to go directly from editing to playout and to seamlessly manage and store assets across departments without ever having to transcode.

This advance is due to the flexible, multi-format architecture of the K2 systems, which can integrate multiple editors such as Edius and Apple Final Cut Pro, and to the ability of the EDIUS and K2 platforms to handle MPEG, IMX, DVCPRO and HD-MPEG natively. Moreover, with Grass Valley's format-flexible approach, the format choices will get even greater over time.

This collaborative workgroup system enables multiple EDIUS craft editors to share content stored on the K2 server and seamlessly collaborate on specific clips or entire projects - and enables users to eliminate transcoding as they search for, store, and manage assets across different departments.

Combined with the Grass Valley digital news production product line - which touches the entire process, from ingest to edit to playout - the EDIUS craft nonlinear and market-leading K2 storage round out the industry's most complete, flexible solution for broadcast and video professionals in demanding production environments.

"Grass Valley is the leader in the deployment of digital news production systems. Now, with the K2/EDIUS integration, we provide a robust solution for not only hard news but also for episodic magazine shows as well as promo editing," said Marc Valentin, president of the Grass Valley business within Thomson. "Now more segments of the market can leverage the benefits of the innovative storage architecture of the K2 storage system."

This integrated system will be demonstrated at NAB in the Thomson booth SU2906. This announcement supports Thomson's overall strategy to help its global media and entertainment customer base acquire, create, edit and manipulate, aggregate re-purpose and package their high-value content. Grass Valley is a leading innovator and supplier of digital delivery platforms which are leading the move towards high quality multi-channel television, and at the same time enabling new media opportunities such as IP TV and rich content to mobile devices.
