ARRIFLEX D-20 Film-Style Digital Camera at NAB 2006 (19/5/2006)

The ARRI group of companies are pleased to announce that the ARRIFLEX D-20 film-style digital camera will be exhibited at the NAB show this year in two configurations:

HD Mode, with the ARRI FlashMag mounted on the camera, providing 10 minutes recording capacity for an uncompressed 4:4:4 HD signal or 15 minutes for a 4:2:2 signal, cable free;

Data Mode, coupled to the dxQ recording and processing unit, which has been developed by Quantel in close co-operation with the Research and Development Department of ARRI, specifically for this purpose.

The Data Mode offers a workflow with the option to output processed images as 2k files of any standard format, including 10 bit log dpx which is the standard for Digital Intermediate (DI) facilities worldwide. Following suitable color grading (timing) these images are eminently suitable for output to 35mm film using the ARRILASER film recorder. A further benefit of the Data Mode is the ability to output the whole 4:3 area of the large (24x18mm) CMOS sensor, which the D-20 utilizes. Aside from greater flexibility in framing, this also makes it possible to use existing anamorphic lenses with a conventional 2:1 'squeeze' and produce images of 2.35:1 final aspect ratio without reducing the vertical resolution. Based on the number of pixels exposed on the sensor, an anamorphic image captured in Data Mode contains nearly twice as much information as a 2.35:1 image, which is cropped from a 16:9 capture.

The ARRIFLEX D-20 camera is available for rental from ARRI rental companies in the USA (ARRI CSC), Germany (ARRI Rental) and the UK (ARRI Media) and is being used for a variety of television, advertising and feature film productions.
