New EuCon Hybrid Option Completes Euphonix's Music and Audio Post DAW Integration Plans (23/6/2006)

EuCon Hybrid allows multiple DAWs to be controlled from System 5 console surface

EuCon Connects Euphonix Control Surfaces to DAWs

For the first time in Europe Euphonix today showed a new option for their range of System 5 digital audio mixing systems called EuCon Hybrid. EuCon Hybrid extends the control capabilities of the console beyond the dedicated DSP Cores to the outside world, bringing Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) tracks onto the console surface for mixing. The DAWs communicate with the console via the EuCon high-speed Ethernet control protocol. No other control system or console comes close to the power and total integration of Euphonix control surfaces with EuCon.

The announcement of EuCon Hybrid completes an ambitious long-term plan by Euphonix to bring professional control surface integration to DAW users. Euphonix can now offer three levels of controllers starting with the MC media application controller with 56 LCD SmartSwitches, 9 knobs, 4 faders, jog wheel, keyboard and trackball that has been shipping since the beginning of the year. The MC is perfect for serious DAW or video software application control and is designed to speed up operation and to allow the user simpler access to the DAW's features and commands. The System 5-MC integrated DAW controller includes the MC with System 5 channel strips each with 8 knobs and TFT screen for professional editorial and audio mixing applications. At the high end are the range of Euphonix System 5 consoles that have been shipping since 2000 to both audio post and music clients. With the EuCon Hybrid option for System 5 any of Euphonix's existing customers can upgrade to include professional DAW integration.

Rather than make do with existing protocols such as HUI and Mackie Control, which have limited features when it comes to professional applications, Euphonix invented a new protocol called EuCon that provides full high-speed integration between a controller and a software application over Ethernet. Apple's Logic Pro, Steinberg's Nuendo and Merging's Pyramix all support the EuCon protocol for unrivalled control integration.

EuCon also deals with existing protocols such as HUI and Mackie Control by translating high speed EuCon commands to virtual MIDI ports in the DAW. By using Ethernet and EuCon for these MIDI protocols Euphonix can achieve much faster and higher resolution control that with standard MIDI connectivity. This multi-layer approach to control goes way beyond what other manufacturers can achieve and gives the user access to multiple networked workstations and control access to ANY application, both audio and video.
