Vision Research Introduces Hot-Swappable, Non-Volatile, On-Camera Mass Storage for Phantom HD and Phantom 65 High-Speed Digital Cameras (5/4/2007)

To meet the needs of Phantom HD and Phantom 65 high-speed digital camera customers who require longer recording times, Vision Research is introducing the Phantom(r) CineMag line of non-volatile memory magazines at NAB this week. Available in three sizes -- 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB -- the Phantom CineMag fits snugly on the top of the Phantom HD or Phantom 65 camera, dramatically extending recording time and providing an immediate safe storage for high-speed images.

For example, using the Phantom HD to record 1920x1080 images at 400 frames-per-second (fps), one can record 99000 frames or 240 seconds into the 256GB Phantom CineMag. At 24 fps, record for up to 68 minutes.

On the Phantom HD, when recording at greater than 400 fps, one must record into the camera's high-speed RAM, then upload those images into the Phantom CineMag. At speeds up to 400 fps, recording directly into the Phantom CineMag is supported.

On the Phantom 65, record 4K images (4096x2440) at up to 90 fps directly into the Phantom CineMag. If shooting at 4096x2440 at 60 fps for digital cinema, for example, record up to 44,000 frames into the 512GB version. That is about 12 minutes of recording time.

Images are stored in the Vision Research Cine raw file format -- an efficient, uncompressed format for storing raw digital images.

Images are available for immediate playback and review using the camera's HD-SDI output, allowing for on-set preview of stored cines. When a series of takes is complete or the Phantom CineMag becomes full, simply remove it from the camera and move it to the companion Phantom(r) CineStation connected to a PC. From the PC you can further review, edit, and save the cines to disk for later transcoding and/or importing into post-production. While downloading from one Phantom CineMag, simply put another onto the camera, and continue shooting.

For example, after a series of takes, move the Phantom CineMag to the docking station and use IRIDAS SpeedGrade On Set to quickly grade images or apply LUTs and verify the integrity of the takes.
