Philips anti-piracy watermarking solution available for use with Avid editing systems (14/4/2007)

Philips announces an Avid AVX(tm) (Avid Video eXtensions) plug-in to allow content creators to use Philips watermarking technology in Avid(r) digital nonlinear editing systems. Once installed, this new software extension allows film, video, audio, animation, games, and broadcast professionals to protect their content with a unique watermark within their Avid workflow.

Avid Technology, Inc. is a world leader in digital media creation tools. Today, many of the world's most recognized primetime television shows, feature films, independent films, and music videos are made using one or more Avid products. The availability of the Philips watermarking solution as a software extension for Avid digital media creation systems is a response to the increasing demand for content protection and ease-of-use from content creators. This AVID plug-in is an addition to the current Philips CompoTrack Product Family. Watermarking is recognized as one of the consumer friendly solutions to identify and control this problem.

By embedding date, time and place watermarks into the video and audio of the original digital content, illegal copies can be traced back to the distribution source. Watermarks are imperceptible yet the watermark can be detected even after the most rigorous piracy attacks. Philips watermarking technology has been deployed with great success for more than six years. For example it exposed the origin of illegally copied and distributed versions of major motion pictures intended only for film award review prior to their official release. Also Philips has the only widely accepted and deployed Digital Cinema watermark product.

"Philips is pleased to work together with the world leaders in digital media creation tools to make watermarking an integrated part of their workflow," says Ronald Maandonks, Senior Business Development Manager of Philips Content Identification. "Content creators can easily protect their content with watermarks just as easy by installing the AVX plug-in on their Avid system, and then applying the watermark directly within the Avid editing timeline."

"Our customers create the world's most recognized content in film, television, and broadcast news, and they need the ability to protect its value across the production pipeline and into distribution," says Michael Phillips, senior evangelist, Post Market, at Avid. "With the expansion of collaborative workflows, more people than ever are potentially touching the content as it is developed. Using Philips' new AVX plug-in, Avid customers can now embed unique watermarks to protect these assets and deter their unauthorized distribution."

Philips Content Identification delivers a suite of watermarking and fingerprinting technology products to the content and movie industry.
