News Sony launches new multi-format BVM-L230 and LMD-4250W monitors (8/10/2007) Sony's new BVM-L230 reference LCD monitor offers ultimate picture quality and consistency for high quality broadcast applications Sony today welcomed an expansion to its flat-screen professional monitors family. The LMD-4250W complements Sony's redesigned range of widescreen, flat-panel LMD video monitors launched at NAB in April, along with the BVM-L230. Sony's BVM-L230 is today's most advanced flat-screen monitor for broadcast and D-Cinema productions or evaluation and mastering applications. This new high-end 23-inch reference monitor elevates broadcast post-production capabilities with full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, a 10-bit LCD driver, a precision backlight system and a high-frame rate. Sony's unique TRIMASTER (tm) technology ensures the ultimate picture performance is guaranteed for any critical picture evaluation. Andrew Brearley, Technical Manager, Post Production North, ITV Productions said, "I'm very impressed with what I've seen of the pre-production displays. They appear to offer excellent image quality, impressive colour clarity and the facility to display Interlace images is certainly a great benefit." After viewing the Sony BVM monitor pre-production models, ITV Productions is considering using the new range for its main online editing, graphics and grading suites. New monitor strengthens LMD line up Strengthening Sony's existing LMD monitors, the LMD-2450W and the LMD-2050W, the one-piece LMD-4250W, with sheet key on the front bezel, provides broadcast professionals with an exceptionally large screen to view and edit footage. Complete with ChromaTru(tm) Sony's colourmanagement technology compensates for variations in LCD colour levels typically caused by differences in chromaticity coordinates, colour temperature and gamma curves. Designed for a wide range of applications, the LMD-4250W offers full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) on a 42-inch screen. The LMD-4250W also provides uniform pixel-to-pixel colour reproduction for accuracy and consistent reproducibility and delivers broadcast-quality gradation. The LMDÐ4250W monitor is equipped with a variety of analogue video inputs including analogue and digital computer inputs. Digital video inputs are available in SD and HD through an option board that provides multi-format capabilities from SD up to HD 1080/60i. Daniel Dubreuil, Senior Manager, Product Marketing, Sony Europe commented, "The latest addition to Sony's LMD video monitor range meets the broadcast industry's increasing demand for high-quality HD and flat-screen technology. The LMD-4250W offers an easy upgrade to HD production and provides capability for multi-screen and quad-split viewing, along with system scalability, to help facilitate a more efficient workflow in a variety of applications, including production and post-production environments." Mike Pearce, Facilities Manager at LEM Digital, who hire and support digital editing systems for film and television productions commented, "We do a lot of research with the products that we use to find the technology that our clients prefer and in the monitor's market, Sony always comes out on top. The picture and colour quality of the new LMD range is particularly impressive." Ease of use has also led to a high take up of the LMD family. Pearce went on to add, "In our line of work, we require monitors of the highest standard and these monitors are also functionally intuitive allowing our engineers to set up the monitors specifically for each client or production quickly and easily." Visual Impact, the international broadcasting equipment supplier, has invested over £800k in Sony's new HDW-790P camcorders and LCD monitors. This reflects the growing trend for more and more productions to be shot in HD and the improvement in LCD technology. "These products give our customers greater flexibility at lower costs," said Tim Sparrock, Sales Director. "Previously LCD technology could never match that of CRT's for critical viewing but these new monitors are a great leap forward in picture quality". London's leading Independent post-production group, The Farm, have bought 35 Sony LMD-2050 monitors. Chief Engineer, Jack Edney said, "Sony set the industry standard in production monitors. Not only are they amongst the most reliable within their category but they also are the most stylish on the market too." Edney continued, "They have a variety of inputs to suit all our various sources and they deal well with the I to P conversion." Since the range launch at NAB in April, more than 1,300 of Sony's LMD units have sold worldwide. Andreas Lattman, Engineering Project Manager at Switzerland's largest TV production company, TPC (tv producioncentre Zurich ag) bought 26 LMD- 2050Ws and 17 LMD-2450Ws, said, "The LMD-2050W and LMD-2450W models have provided us with complete functionality and they accept all the signal formats that we use." The purchased LMD models at TPC are being used in the monitor walls of the new High-Definition sports studio. Lattman continued, "These monitors were really the best on the market. Full High-Definition resolution and the availability of DVI inputs enabled us to put the monitors together with a Quad Split system, making the purchase of these models an easy choice".
